The American Cyclist’s Association has launched an investigation into whether the riders who rode their bikes across the United States on Wednesday were protected from the deadly collision between a cyclist and a train, after a collision report was leaked to the media.
Cyclists across the country are currently being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder after the crash between the US-bound train and a motorcycle near Los Angeles, California.
In the report, a rider’s name was redacted to protect his identity.
However, in a letter to the American Cyclists Association, American Cycling Association executive director Tom Rothwell said the riders were not covered by the rider protection system, despite the fact that they were wearing helmets.
The rider protection program in the US has been in place since 1990, and covers cyclists who have been hit by vehicles.
It was designed to protect riders, particularly those involved in extreme sports.
The Acyclist’s Federation, which represents the riders, says the rider protections were “the first steps in the right direction”.
“This rider protection policy will be a huge step forward for the riders,” said Richard Anderson, Acyclists Federation president.
“The Acyclers Federation supports the riders and their families and believes the program will make a huge difference in preventing serious injury and death to cyclists and other road users.”
In the accident report, the train driver was identified as Thomas Hensley, who was killed by the train.
Mr Rothwell called the incident “the most dangerous collision in US history”, saying the train was travelling at 130 kilometres per hour when the collision occurred.
He said the accident was not reported to the FBI until Wednesday, two days after the incident, and that the Acyclics Federation did not know why the train failed to notify authorities about the collision until a few hours later.
Mr Anderson said Mr Hensy was “a very brave man who put himself at risk to save others”.
He said he was grateful to the people of Los Angeles for their support and for the police response to the crash.
Mr Hengley was a former member of the US National Team and the 2008 Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist who won gold at the London Olympics in 2008.
The National Bike Association, which organises the National Bike Championships, said it was “deeply saddened” by the accident.
A spokesperson said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the rider and we stand by the riders safety.”
The A Cyclists Federation said that its members were concerned about the rider’s mental health, as well as the safety of other cyclists. “
Our condolences are extended to the families of all who were injured in the crash.”
The A Cyclists Federation said that its members were concerned about the rider’s mental health, as well as the safety of other cyclists.
“There has been a huge amount of discussion and investigation going on around the safety protocols and how these protocols were set up,” Mr Rothfield said.
“It is difficult to say whether the rider had a history of mental illness, but this is not the first time we have heard of a rider who was involved in serious incidents and who was not taken seriously for a reason.”
He said that he believed the US authorities had taken “significant steps” in the past year to improve the rider safety program, and would continue to work with the American Cycling Federation.
The US Federal Highway Administration said that they would be working closely with the A Cyclers Federation and the American Motorists Federation to address the issue.
The agency said it would work with “all stakeholders” to improve rider safety.
In a statement, the A Cycles Federation said: The A Cycling Federation and other riders in the sport are working hard to educate the general public about the importance of wearing a helmet.
“We have received numerous calls from riders across the world asking for advice on the importance and use of helmets.
We have listened and are looking forward to sharing our findings and recommendations with the media.”
Mr Rothfeld said the A cyclists federation would continue its efforts to improve safety and rider safety standards across the sport.
We have been very much involved in the A Cycle Federation, and its efforts are aimed at increasing rider safety across the cycling community.””
This is the most dangerous crash in UShistory, and we need to do everything we can to make sure that these riders don’t die from it.”
